Local DC Concerts - YahZarah N'Dambi Bilal

A friend of mine on twitter said that he hadn't been to any concerts this year. The following lineup should help him remedy that. Make sure you check out these artists as the make their way to the District. One of the great things about DC is it's museum scene. Pair the right DC establishment with the right artist and you can have one hell of a night, or at least the start of one.

Coming up: YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT...

Yahzarah: multiple dates starting November 26th. November 29

N'Dambi: November 27 *FREE SHOW!

Yahzarah ~ Ms. Purple St. James

YahZarah is a DC native, an alumni of the famed Duke Ellington School of the Arts, former background singer and arranger for Erykah Badu and currently lead vocalist for hip hop group The Foreign Xchange. (From YahZarah's Myspace page)

Purple St. James has been called upon to bless the stage with outstanding artists such as Prince, Floetry, Musiq Soul Child, Chaka Kahn, Donnie, Amel Larrieux, Anthony David, Goapele, Talib Kweli, Rahsaan Paterson, Raheem Davaughn, R Kelly, J. Davey, Common, Bilal Oliver, The Roots, Erykah Badu and others.

She has an international following that seems to get bigger as she progresses as an artist, while maintaining her North American fan base waiting for more.

Whether you believe in superheroes or not, YahZarah aka Purple St. James is a truly unique voice that measures weight juxtaposed in a new era of sound.

N'Dambi

November 27, 2009* FREE SHOW!

The soul/R&B songstress and pianist performs tunes from her recently released debut CD Pink Elephant.

Pink Elephant, the long-awaited Stax Records debut from stirring soul singer N’dambi, explores the art of revelation. The album’s lead single “Can’t Hardly Wait,” is a biting chunk of scorching sarcasm delivered in the commanding singer’s rich tone.

N’dambi delivered her debut solo CD Little Lost Girl Blues in 1999. Since then she has released the two-disc set Tunin' Up & Cosignin', and the 2005 set A Weird Kind Of Wonderful, which was released only in Japan. On Pink Elephant, N’dambi ingeniously distills soul-deep inspiration into a sensual style of elegance and power, making her a fundamental new addition to the Stax legacy.

Bilal
For Bilal Sayeed Oliver, dreams started falling into place quite rapidly. A self-confessed jazz junkie from Philadelphia, PA, Bilal started out by singing in small clubs until he began training in jazz and big-band arrangements at the Mannes Music Conservatory in New York. With this formal training, the singer/songwriter learned to sing opera in seven languages. His debut album, 1st Born Second, is a collection of songs entirely by the artist himself, right down to the music, lyrics, and notes. His single "Soul Sista" appears on the Love & Basketball movie soundtrack. Bilal is a member of the Soulquarians collective, along with Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, Q-Tip, and D'Angelo.
